Ar-Feiniel?

I may have read this somewhere, but I cannot remember for the life of me XD

So, I know the surname Ar-Feiniel is given to Aredhel as she is the White Lady of the Noldor.

But I was just wondering, occasionally Galadriel is referred to as the White Lady too...does Tolkien ever use the title "Ar-Feiniel" to describe her, or is it particular to Aredhel?

That's actually a really good question. I don't remember her ever having Ar-Feiniel mentioned as a part of her name, so it must have been just for Aredhel. Of course, sic Thrandy in here and he'll be able to tell you for sure.

She was indeed known to some as the white-lady, though for most who used her Sindarin name, thought it quite adequate. If I were to call her by the name it would not have the root fein. And I think you may agree it is quite interesting...

To be honest, thinking of thedifferent words for white...
Fein (old) --> foen --> faun (Fan-) (cloudy white), I guess ethereal, as often translated 'cloud'
Glos 'radiant white' or even snow-white
Nimp/ Nimf (nim-) 'White/ Pale'

None of them.. quite sum it up in one word...


Galadriel *reminds it means 'radiant garlanded maiden' * Was known as The White lady because she seemed to shine with a white light...

silim/light(white) silivren(thil-)/white(shining)

Siliv being the Sindarin of Silima (feanor's name for substance he shaped the silmarils from... Interestingly they were partly inspired by her hair! )

no name for her was ever rendered with these words...
I would probably go with: ar- thil- ien, Arthilien


To be fair though, it would not be used often, and indeed wasn't used at all in either form in any of Tolkiens work. Possibly the westron name White-Lady, was the extent to which it flourished who knows.
