Would you look at that? Starting a thread about the very character I'm roleplaying as(Also giving the topic the same name as my application for him, no less!). Do I have no shame?
Also, take heed! Kinda a long post.. You may find the stuff in my post about him interesting, or you can look at it as completely pointless and only serves to try and make the post look fancy. I'm no expert and I hope I don't seem like I'm trying to act like one. Just'a posting my thoughts..
You're familiar with that orc from Peter Jackson's Film Adaption of Lord of the Rings: Return of the King? The one that kills a wounded Madril in Osgiliath? The one that Side-Steps a flying boulder and then spits on it afterwords? That one orc with the pumpkin shaped piggy-potato head? Fuzzle-Bumps? Yeah, that guy.. The one that everybody hates, mainly because of the way he looks(He's almost on the same level as Denethor when it comes to Most-Hated Character!).
Never read the books, but I am on quite a few forums for Lord of the Rings and have read a few other comments about some of the things from the books that never made it into the movie, like Tom Bombadil and the Barrow-Downs. However, that's saved for another topic. As I'm sure you know, this topic is about Gothmog, the Orc Lieutenant from Peter Jackson's movie!
A few little Tid-Bits I've picked up, both on forums and various encyclopedia's for Lord of the Rings:
-Nobody knows what the heck he is(Man, Nazgul, Orc, etc.)
-His name was mentioned in one sentence only in the books
-Often gets mixed up with Gothmog, The Lord of Balrogs
Nobody Knows what the heck he is
It's exactly like it sounds. Tolkien never did write anything else about the mysterious Gothmog, except that he was Lieutenant of Morgul and took full command of Sauron's Armies after the Witch-King was slain at the battle of Pelennor Fields. It's never stated that he died during said battle, though it is assumed that he, (un)fortunately, did. Tolkien also never wrote anything about what race of being he belonged to: Nazgul, Man, Orc, Uruk-Hai, Troll. All a mystery.
Nazgul
Many believe that he was one of the nine and is believed to be the second most powerful of the nine. However, the second most powerful nazgul(Also the only one actually given a name) is Khamul.
Man
Most likely a Black Numenorean, like the Mouth of Sauron.
Orc/Uruk-Hai
Now, some people say that it's very unlikely that Sauron would give an orc such a high rank, but it's still a possibility.
Troll
More unlikely then the Orc/Uruk-Hai theory listed above. On a board game, Gothmog was listed as a Half-Troll Warrior. Tolkien never stated that this Gothmog was Half-Troll, but that possibility was neither confirmed nor denied.. Just like all the other theories listed above..
Balrog
There are people who get the Lieutenant of Morgul and the Lord of Balrogs mixed up and even say "There never was a Gothmog in the books! The only Gothmog there was was the Balrog!" it's very unlikely that the Lieutenant of Morgul himself was a Balrog, but even this is neither confirmed nor denied.
Out of all those choices that Peter Jackson chose, he chose Gothmog to be an Orc in his film adaption of Return of the King. The result either displeased some while there were also those who shrugged the thought off and accepted that PJ chose to make him an orc.
Now, for Book Gothmog, I'm probably going to be stuck with thinking that he's an orc because of watching the movies first, as I've never read the books before. But what about this idea?
The Gothmog in the Movie is actually a Black Numenorean
It's assumed that Gothmog is diseased(Most likely Elephantiasis. *Shudder*). But hey, Orcs aren't the only ones that fall under such diseases. It may be possible that Gothmog was a Black Numenorean much like the Mouth of Sauron, except he contracted a disease that, well.. Deformed him into making him look more orcish. If you look at his face, there are a few marks around his mouth(Well, on his chin.) that kinda resemble the markings around the Mouth of Sauron's.. Mouth.. Just not as bloody and gory.
My last words on him? He's a pretty cool character in the movie! ;D Sure, he looks to boot, but he's pretty cool once you get used to him. Of course, it's all coming from someone who is a big fan of the villains.. ;D
Now then, what about you guys? What are you're thoughts? Don't worry, I won't take any offense with whatever you say about him.
Kraken Guard looks over at Gothmog, who is giving her a rather dirty look. Kraken Guard pats him on the head and smiles innocently. Gothmog, in turn, grumbles in annoyance.
Now, enough about me! It's time for you to discuss away.
