I thought a thread for Middle Earth Languages or even an on-site phrase book would be nice [with the Ladies blessings of course!]. Anyway I'll start with a short (oh yeah, that sounds like Thranduil doesn't it: short and to the point - I thinkist not!) discussion on Elvish words and names; just for fun!

I was just wondering what forms (Elvish - on the whole) people used in their posts; and their sources...
I use on the whole Sindarin if i have a mind because not only are my characters either true Sindar or influenced there by; but it is of a style i like [Welsh / Celtic like in its form and plural - interesting for me at any rate].
I have never used a great deal of Quenya [of an almost Swedish flavour - by some peoples opinion], even the 'standby phrase';
Elen síla lumenn' omentielvo / A star shines on the hour of our meeting ...
...which is on the whole widespread, if a little outdated and overly formal for the third age; unless you are in the land of Lindon or perhaps Rivendell. (seem to remember Gwindor {book not film} using it to address Frodo on the road to Bree(?or was it the other way round - I think Gwindor described it as "eloquent"))
I have recently given up on elvish, as it can be hard to remain true to your racial and geographical origin and still express yourself clearly. My characters are chosen to allow me some flexibility; ie Thranduil a Sindarin Lord of old who would no doubt know Sindarin and perhaps Quenya, unless he was brought up in Doriath (an ancient Sindar Realm) where it was an outlawed tongue for much of the time (believe it or not!). He would also know the wood elf tongue of his people; but there is precious little source for that, except in educated guess work; eg the name of Amolas i made in a recent RP with Sodri... titled 'GAZING'
Am- up, lofty, high. As seen in the name of Elf Lord Amroth 'high/up climber' He was supposed to be Sindar but with an adopted wood-elf name, though accounts differ from source to source.
-(g)o- (collection) of -las leaf, leaves; as seen in the obvious and WE origin Legolas.
Out of curiosity: Cal- or Loeg- Sindarin compound forms for 'green'
-gwa- 'together'
-lass 'leaves'
Sindarin form something like (approx! I only wrote this quickly.): Cal(en)gwalas(s); Celingwalas(s) or Loeg'walas(s)
The latter form the more 'familiar', it almost sounds like Legolas.
It shows the more flowing sound for natural names in the wood-elf tongue!
Thranduil's decision to use the local diacritic as appose to Sindarin saved his son from an altogether 'uglier' name, me thinks!
That was long winded and for that i apologise! (saying that if you get this far the apology is meaningless perhaps)
