what if the war of the ring was a diversion? sauron send his troops to die and give the "defeated enemy" imression and the one ring was a fake his spirit is splited in 19 parts in the rings given to 3 elves 7 dwarves and 9 mens while sauron control the hosts of the rings and make them attack strategic point while sauron is safe on the hand of his hosts and the enemy destroy sauron's fake ring and think that they have won and sauron auto destroy his army and kingdom and in the given rings prepare his plan to come back to the world and conquere it
so lotr might be biggest conspiracy in a book!!

Well, it would be a sound theory, but for one thing: At least nine of the rings were destroyed in the war when the ringwraiths were killed at Mt. Doom. I don't know what became of the other ten rings, but I think that its safe to say that they're under lock and key, since there are no Elven or Dwarven Ringwraiths.
Of course, we don't know for sure whether the Nine were destroyed or not either... But I think it's a pretty safe assumption. With Sauron, you never know though.

yes its a theory.
sauron is a great tactician and surely one of the greatest of its time, so even if he lost some spirit part, he could have restored them with his memory and come back to strike back.
But, the ringwraith could have been cool bounty hunters, like the guards of the Azkaban prison and the ghost of the corrupted king still remain hiden somewhere.
The middle-earth's future is still and will stay hidden from us. Hey maybe tolkien had more stories in mind but died too early?
Our poor king has died too early and didnot profit of his glory!

The late great J.R.R.T did start a new book (of which i have the first chapter); its title was 'return of the shadow'. I am afraid DL Jr you may be right... ...shock horror! It might not be quite what you expect; but then it was only the first chapter, so god knows where the story might have gone.

I don't believe that Sauron would come back. With the destruction of his ring he was utterly destoryed. However, in the books Gandalf does say that Sauron was only a servant to a greater evil, so the "Return of the Shadow" might be that greater evil.
The Wraiths steeds were destroyed by the eruption of Mt. Doom, after Frodo destroyed the ring. When Sauron was vanquished the power of all the rings also was vanquished (that is why the Three fled to the Grey Havens.), and so the lives and power of the nine failed, and they were no more.

Then again all the races of middle earth were capable of evil even the elves of the west and the highest of men. infact the deforestation of gondor and enedwaith by the seafearing kings of Numenor was an insult to Eru's creation really So many native peoples displaced and god knows the ecological impact.

Just thought I'd point out: Return of the Shadow is a collection of early drafts of LotR. It's part of the HoME (History of Middle Earth) series compiled by Tolkien's son.
This, however, is an interesting theory about the War of the Ring being a diversion.

It is unlikely, though interesting enough.
Its true no-one really knows when the 'Return of the shadow' was set, as it was left unstarted really; its worth reading though.

Interesting theory, but quite unlikely.
Do any of you know where it was written that Tolkien wanted to write about a final war in which it's basically for Valinor and some-one (can't remember who, though I'm fairly sure he's first-age) finally defeats Morgoth?
It was written that the elven rings began to lose power after the one ring was destroyed, hence why Lorien and Imladris fell into disrepair.

I think (though by no means certain) Tolkien was designing a final battle as Morgoth came to the undying shores for the silmarils; then as i gathered it he changed his mind and the Noldor in their infinite wisdom followed Morgoth back to the Mortal world and the longest age of war began.
