Legolas presented a very unique idea to me. What if we were to all started reading the Silmarillion together? I would hand out reading assignments (nothing too serious) and then we could have discussions here on the board about what we think of the reading so it can better help us understand what Tolkien meant.
If you have a copy of the Sil, just post here so I can have an idea how many people might be interested in this little project.

That sounds like alot of fun!
I have a big presentation due on the 28th but past that I would have more time to participate and would definately be intrested! I would really like to have some more indepth discussion of the Sil, I knew two people who had read it besides myself but we have lost touch and sadly never really got the chance to discuss it.

Well, let's not get into it quite yet. I personally am interested because I've not read past the first chapter. We need to take it slow, not only because the book is long, but also because the subject-matter is complex and detailed.
^^
Anyone else interested?

If it was to be done in the summer I would be up for it. I have not read it in years and wanted to this summer, its time I read Tolkien again (I used to read LotR's every year.) I am an uber newb here though, so feel free to ignore me or be skeptical about me sticking around or even RPing *has a massive RPG of her own to run* I am a massive Rings nerd though, as is my partner, in fact it was online Tolkien discussions that got us chatting on IM, and the Sil actually.

Wow, this sounds like a really good idea, actually. I'm ashamed to admit it, but I've never read the Silmarillion all the way through. Every time I pick up, something seems to get in my way, or I lose motivation. I definitely think it'd be a good idea to read it as a group! Just let me know if you guys decide to do this, and I'll join you!

Well, the last time I tried to do it, there wasn't too much force behind it; one or two people who never even said if they had the book... but I am still up for trying.

Faramir: Have no shame, for it readeth like a brick, until the sing song ways of its words are sewn in thine heart and then within them thou mayest live. lol (skip the first couple of sections, hint, hint, then go back to them later... ) They only describe the nature of certain beings and entities and if the creation story gets too much, read the later stories and look up the characters in the family trees at the back. Or read it with us... yay

So, I finally got my very-own copy of the Sil; I had to give the copy I had back to the library eventually... lmao. They were starting to send suits after me to get it back.
Anyway, I am ready to start reading chapter one. I'll need a lot of encouragement to get through the first few pages.

We can do it 5 pages at a time if you like and then post any thoughts or questions...

That might work. Let's say we read the first five-six pages by... Friday? Saturday? Then we have a small chat about what we thought insofar, and then read a few more pages.
;D

Not yet; my car broke down and I've spent all my free time outside dinking around in the engine block. Greasy hands are not conducive to reading.

I'm ready to start reading as soon as you guys are. Just give me the heads up when you guys are ready/fix your broken cars/find your lost copies of the book. Hahaha.
(I own like four or five different editions of every book in The Lord of the Rings, including the Silmarillion. lol! Every time I find an edition I don't own at a used book sale or something, I just have to buy it. It's an involuntary and spontaneous LotR purchasing compulsion.)
